Welcome to my art page! I am a artist currently living in Houston, Texas.
I am currently working on a new project with actor and model Brandon Stacy to benefit the Star Trek Phase II project in NY.
I enjoy sketching organic forms. Drawing mermaids, centaurs, fairies, mermen and other fantasy subjects is one of my favorite pasttimes.
Bio
I've been drawing and doodling my whole life. My mother says that I started out drawing bunnies and cats on everything. I won a few art competitions in school and made it into an advanced art class with a wonderful teacher. My high school art teachers helped me gain more confidence. I was sculpting, painting, drawing, sewing, and still doodling. I was fascinated and inspired by Disney art and japanese animation.
I started focusing on mermaid art and fairies after selling a few on ebay. I create the art in pencil and then scan and paint it in photoshop and paint shop pro. I've done many paintings on real canvas as well. I use a transparent watercolor style. As I am red green colorblind, most of my artwork focuses on blue and purple, my favorite colors.
When I am starting a new project I usually put on a movie and start drawing on a lap board surrounded by kitty cats and iced tea.
I can print anything you see in my galleries and personalize it. I offer a choice of cardstock 110 lb paper or glossy photo paper. If you have a special canvas size you want I can order you up to 16x20 from my friend in the canvas biz. Please email me if you have any special custom ideas, such as tattoos or murals.
I usually work at Renaissance Festivals doing Henna Tattoos. I was at the Allen Park Art Fair with my own booth.
Art History: A long time ago I used to spoil my homework with sketches of dragons, horses and fairies. I took every art class I could and even got independant studies in art in my senior year. I worked backstage in the theatre too, painting backdrops for South Pacific and Wizard of Oz. I did a paintball mural downtown in Splatball City. In college I adored studying art history and was majoring in Veterinary Science. I had to leave due to money issues (and a fear of blood). I started working at a local movie theatre. A few years later I put up some fantasy paintings on ebay. The one that sold first was a sexy blond merman....well after 70 mermaid prints and drawings I switched over to fairies & centaurs, some anime and I now have over 400 prints on my site. I use clicky pencils and my thumb. I scan and use Paint Shop Pro X and a mouse to color. Darren got me a 9" by 12" Wacom tablet. It turned into quite a little hobby, and now a much bigger hobby, and since then I have shipped art all over the world and done a lot of commissions, tattoos, & murals. I scored an art fair and tattoo work at Michigan Renaissance Festival, Kenosha Renaissance Festival and Texas Renaissance Festival. I upgraded my home studio to include a scanner, Athlon XP PC system, Epson R1800 printer with bulk ink system, and the Wacom tablet from D. I also have scores of bags & boards, tons of prints and a cool selection of rare original paintings on canvas. When kids come over I let them play in there and pick out some drawings to color. I love talking to kids about art! I usually tell them to always sign their work and not to draw on lined paper - two things my mom always told me. Should have been an art teacher but I got involved in computer repair and now I work in Houston doing PC support, so I dig that.
I had the honor of having my Mermaid Couple art published in the Imagine Project 2007 art book in Australia.
Movie Theatre: We have a 65" Sony HDTV with JBL Northridge Series surround speakers and a SVS 325 watt RMS BASH amplifier cylinder subwoofer. The thing is like a monolith. Our plush seating ensures a wonderful nap as well as comfort while watching the latest sci-fi flicks. We have 480 DVD's to pass the time with. I just made plush red velvet curtains for our movie theatre and we've been told it's "THE WHIP" and ok you just have to come over and watch Star Wars alright? Get in the car. Darren and I are audiophiles - Audiophile: from Latin audire "to hear" and Greek philos "loving," can be generally defined as a person dedicated to achieving high fidelity in the recording and playback of music. - so we really dig movies and playing music in the theatre. The cats like it too. Oh and we also have a PS3, Ps2, Xbox 'modded', & Nintendo 64 to round out our entertainments. So when are you coming over?
The D: The D is my lovely baritone singer husband Darren. His brothers call him "The Biiiiiiiiiig D" We met at the movie theatre where we both worked. I was in concessions, he was the projectionist! Very romantic! He's a cat lover or else we might not have gotten along. He likes music and movies, and art too. I drove him to his audition with Michigan Opera Theatre, and now he has been in over 32 operas. My favorite is Verdis Aida, and he was recently in La Cenerentola downtown at the Detroit Opera House. There is nothing cooler than watching your hubby sing in front of thousands of people. Plus my mom loves him more than me, so he gets more bonus points there. He also sings with the Detroit Concert Choir and does the Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village, not to mention the High Holy Days and a bunch of other cool stuff.
Things I like: Anime, Star Wars, Star Trek, Cats and Horses. Thats it. Just kidding, I like blue, cheese, blue cheese, blue jeeps, did I mention blue? I like warm and fuzzy kitty cats. I like sewing costumes, writing, painting, fixing stuff, fixing cars & computers, travel... I miss playing D&D we used to play every sunday. I have a huge love of language and writing. I undersand German (ich habe 4 katzen, sagen sie meyow), Japanese (haiaku), un poco Spanish and I want to learn Italian next so I can translate what Darren is singing about all the time. I like tea. I drink Red Rose iced tea every single morning. I have 3 pitchers in the fridge at all times.
Anime: I got involved with an amazing online community called the Risembool Rangerswhich is Vic Mignognas fan club. I drove to Toronto from Detroit to meet him. I was only there a couple hours but I felt amazing and Vic and I started writing eachother letters and I helped him out with a couple things and then eventually became his assistant. Now I chase down music licenses and help out with conventions and shipping his CDs. I also recoded and maintain his website.I am so grateful to have such a wonderful friend. He recently became involved in Star Trek Phase 2which is a project started by James Cawley to shoot new Star Trek episodes for the web. I flew out to NY in June of 2010 and participated in a film shoot and had an amazing time. I did hair and makeup for some of the main characters and it was really fun.
Some Serious Stuff: My mom had stroke at our house in 1999. Ever since then D and I have taken care of her and done everything for her while she was learning how to walk again. She lived with us and later to an apartment but then she kept passing out while we away were doing our Nundren Campout in 2004 and had some TIA strokes so we found out she needed Carotid Artery surgery, so she had that done and got to move back home a few months later. In 2006 she had a problem where she started hallucinating a little orange cat (This later became a cool family joke and we got her a "breathing" orange cat stuffed animal - scared the nurses). Turns out it was due to medication problems and diabetes and had to go to the hospital. Then she broke her knee in the hospital and had a heart attack in Jan 2006. She needed open heart surgery, which was done February 13, 2007 at 6am. It was one of the worst days of my entire life. Now she is healing from her surgery, her knee is better and she got to come to live with us for my birthday - March 28(Thank you God). On fark.com they named her Apocalypse Meow - the Unkillable. I thank God every single day that I can come home and she is there to smile at me. She's my closest friend and she's cool as hell. She likes watching movies and anime with me on the couch. She wants to have a library built in and a patio. :) More recently she had a heart valve installed in 2010 and another stroke but she is much better now. Mom is very supportive of everything that I do. She's from Georgia, so I was brought up with the Southern hospitality not often found in the north. Would you like some dinner? Iced tea?
Well, that's it for now, pass my site along to your friends and thanks for stopping by to read about me!
Luv luv,
Miss Kat
